Laugh at the stoners

The husband found the website High Ideas (via The Dish) and just sent it to me for a great holiday laugh.  The Dish describes it as "those accidentally brilliant ideas one gets while stoned."

Excerpts:

"We should be able to text 911... you know... just in case your hiding from a psycho serial killer and can't talk.

"'White Chocolate Milk' Tell me I didn't just blow your mind. I know I just blew your mind"

"If you watch Jaws backwards, it's a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to build a beach."

"Here's how u end the Twilight saga in one scene... Bella and Edwards smoke a blunt. Edward gets the munchies. No more Bella. The end"

"All right, so you know how people do the air quote thing with their fingers? What if people cupped their hands and put them up by each other when saying something in parentheses..."

Click over and have a chuckle...

A Mother's Prayer for Its Child, by Tina Fey

In the year and a half since I've owned my Android phone, the only application I've ever paid for is BeyondPod, an app that lets me download and listen to podcasts. I love it. I never really understood the world of podcasts before, but now that I can get them right on my phone and store them for road trips, flights, etc, I'm a total devotee.

The other day, while cleaning or getting ready or something else equally boring, I listened to the 45 min interview of Tina Fey on Fresh Air. I have to say, I watch 30 Rock but I have NOT been giving Tina Fey her fair admiration. I loved the interview and especially her takes on modern day feminism. The interview is free through that link; you have to listen. I really don't think there are any voices out there right now that are as on-point and funny, she's my new role model.

She was on the show to promote her new book Bossypants and as part of the interview read an excerpt entitled A Mother's Prayer for Its Child. B heard me listening to it from the next room and yelled that he had just heard that interview yesterday in the car and was crying with laughter when she read it. It's alarmingly true, I may frame this for Charlotte's room.

A Mother's Prayer for Its Child
By: Tina Fey

First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.

May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.

When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.

Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.

Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.

May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.

Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen.Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.

And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.

And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.

Amen.”

Bag Lady

If you live in certain parts of New York then you got a fair amount of snow last weekend, and if you live in Plattsburgh, NY then your ass got handed to you. While western NY was getting a few inches, and Albany was get a whole bunch of ice, Plattsburgh was getting the kind of snow that reaches your door handle.

My mom lives in Plattsburgh when she's not working as a traveling nurse and works in labor and delivery. On the day of the storm she got called in to work. With the roads impassable she was left with the option of walking to work. Luckily she only lives about a half mile from her hospital, so it wasn't a huge issue... until she couldn't find her snow pants.

But with the snow knee-high, and her patients waiting, there weren't a whole lot of options. So she took two garbage bags, wrapped one around each leg, tied the yellow ties at the top, and trudged in to work.

She gets to the hospital, changes into her scrubs, starts her shift, is in a room doing the admittance paperwork for a woman in labor and....

Husband to Wife: Honey, you can't imagine how bad it is outside. I mean, it's SO bad that people are just doing whatever they need to. Like, they don't even care what they look like! I was just outside and saw this woman wearing BAGS on her LEGS!

My mom: Uh, yeah, that was me.

It's so wrong, I know

So, apparently, one of the funniest things a wife can say to the father of a daughter is anything suggesting that his daughter MAY be a grown woman one day who MAY know some boys. I try not to pull out the comments too often, lest they lose their efficacy, but sometimes I really can't help myself, and the horrified sound that escapes from B's mouth makes it all worth it.

One of the most adorable things that Charlotte does (in the eyes of her wildly easy-to-please parents) is to give kisses and hugs most of the time you ask. But if anyone in the room asks for a kiss, she has to give everyone a kiss. So last night it was a little before bedtime and she and B were playing on the floor.

B - Charlotte, give daddy a kiss.

Charlotte - (pukers up) mmmmmmmm
(then looks over at me on the couch and walks over all puckered up and gives me a kiss)

B - Charlotte, give daddy a hug.

Charlotte - (tightly squeezes B's neck and then looks at me with her arms outstretched)

(comes and gives me a hug)

B - (laughing) It's so funny how if she does something to one person in the room, she has to do that same thing to everyone in the room!

Me - That's gonna be a real problem in about 18 years.

B - BABY!!

Why all the guns?

Yesterday my pregnant sister-in-law (one of SEVEN pregnant women I currently know) sent me a link on awkward pregnancy photos. And I usually don't post things that are on Facebook or in email forwards, but I can NOT help myself on this one.  I also have absolutely nothing to add because the pictures and accompanying captions from the original blog post will more than speak for themselves...

"It's going to be a good year, Laura. A very Goodyear, indeed."

A fertile man that provides for his family, what more could you want?

I love how she's looking at him tenderly while stealing his gun. There simply aren't enough pregnancy/gun photos.

No. I'm just going to go with a solid no on this one.

"My wife said she wanted curly fries"

At first I thought "Nothing symbolizes maternity better than a watermelon and a gun" and then I thought "Actually, nothing DOES symbolize maternity better than a watermelon and a gun."  Bravo Mad'am.

Totally Awesome Time Waster

If you're feeling a little bored on this hump day, you need to head over to Catalog Living and read about the adventures of Gary & Elaine ("the people who live in your catalogs"). Comedienne Molly Erdman skewers the often ridiculous world of catalog images with brilliant one-liners. There's an extremely good chance you're going to laugh your ass off.

Until we bought this new console, Gary and I had no idea where to put our discarded art!

Gary and Elaine ran down to the water, giggling like children in anticipation of the first dresser of the season washing ashore.

Back in the groove

Hello, campers! It's so nice to see you again.  Today marks the first day back to real life and off of summer vacation.  The suitcases are still packed, the laundry pile is mounting, and B goes back to school tonight. We extended last week's vacation in the Cape by doing a whole lotta nothing over the weekend.  Of course, this was made significantly easier by the fact that the high pollen levels have had me leveled for three days.  It's been nothing but tissues, claritin, and eye drops.  Sexy, yes?

So this is the week where we try to put the pieces back together of our criminally scattered and cluttered home, and then next weekend is Fall Family Schedule time.  We need to work out how to fit in two night classes, one dance class, a baby music class, workout schedules for both of us, homework time, meal planning, etc.  It's a beautifully boring life we lead.

To welcome you back in style, I'll leave you with this little incident from yesterday...

Relevant Background Info: When you're packing a bag to bring to the hospital to have a baby, you have to bring your own shower stuff - shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc.  The easiest way to do this is to buy little empty bottles and fill them.  When I did that last year, I labeled the top of each one "S," "C," & "L" (Shampoo, Conditioner, Lotion) and they've been in our linen closet ever since.

Me (post-shower, yelling down to B in the living room): WE DON'T HAVE ANY LOTION LEFT! I FINISHED THE BASKET AND NEVER BOUGHT ANY MORE.

B (yelling up from the living room): YEAH WE DO, JUST USE THE LITTLE BOTTLE WITH THE "C" ON TOP.

Me (stunned, and now in the living room in my towel):  Uh... you mean the conditioner?

B: Huh?

Me: The bottle of conditioner?

B: What?

Me (holding the bottle): You mean this bottle of conditioner, marked with a "C" on top???

B: That's CONDITIONER?!! I'VE BEEN USING THAT FOR THREE DAYS!!!

Me: (laughing so hard I have little happy-tears rolling down my cheeks)

B: OH MY GOD!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT'S CONDITIONER?!!!

Me: (still hyperventilating... still crying...)

B: I thought it smelled... off!! Not to MENTION that I've been thinking what shitty lotion it was!! I didn't even feel... hydrated after I used it!!!

Me: (no longer crying, but still gasping for air)

B: MAN!! I was WONDERING what the "C" meant!

Me: Oh My God!!  I just remembered the other night!!  You smelled so weird when you came to bed and I couldn't figure out why.  Ha!!!

B: I can not believe I've been rubbing CONDITIONER on myself for THREE DAYS.

"So much squealing"

The conclusion of a discussion B and I had about the possibility of having 3 kids, specifically what it would be like to have 3 girls:

B - I have these visions of you surrounded by three girls, and there is SO. MUCH. SQUEALING.  I've learned recently that no matter how old you all get, the squealing never goes away.  Also, you're all surrounded by tampons.  They're just strewn everywhere.

Me - You think that's what it's like having three girls?

B - Yeah.  And everyone is saying the word "vagina." And then I sigh, pour a scotch, and have to leave the room.

Me - I think you have the picture of a 1970s women's empowerment home study group confused with our potential future family.

B - No, I'm pretty sure I'm right.

When photography goes off course

Aren't Charlotte and her two dads adorable??

B's kind of famous for taking unintended snazzy pictures.  Like the totally unprompted and (allegedly) accidental jazz hands picture at his sister's wedding. That little gem was on our fridge for a year and a half.

Logistics of Siblings

I love having a sibling.  Not the least of which is because of conversations like these:

Me: I'm just calling to remind you that Mother's Day is Sunday, so do something for mom.

Brother: Oooooo.  OK.  What are we gonna get her?

Me: Well I got her a XXXXX today. (edited since she hasn't received it yet)

Brother: Wha?  Well that's not a very good joint gift!

Me: Yeah, it wasn't meant to be.  I saw something I thought she'd like and I bought it.

Brother: Whoa, whoa, whoa! That's not how this works! I'm out here, where dad lives, so I took care of his Christmas presents, now it's your turn to take care of the parent on your coast.

Me: So we're doing this by coasts now?  Rockin.  I assume you'll take care of Father's Day then.

Brother: WhaHoHoHoHoooo, I'm just saying that's how we did it BEFORE.  We'll take care of Father's Day when it comes, let's not jump to conclusions.

(side conversation with B)

Me: Oh, and B wants me to tell you that he's a father now so he's expecting something on Father's Day.

Brother: Ohhhhh SHIT! And you're a MOTHER now!  Damnit! This is getting WAY too complicated.

Me: Should I just take care of my own gift too?  Just buy something nice for myself and let you know how much it was?

Brother: Ha! That's a great idea.  You can just take it out of the money you're sending me for dad's Christmas presents. That's classy, right?

Me: Oh, I'll go you one better.  I'm gonna buy myself something worth MORE than what I owe you - maybe some nice jewelry - then I'll just send you an invoice and you can send me a check for the difference.

Brother: Nice.  But really, what am I gonna get mom?

It's hard to be a guy

Happy Friday, loves. This made me laugh right out loud yesterday afternoon when this email hit my Blackberry at 4:30pm:

From: B
To: Me
Subject: ow

My last 15 seconds – first, a feeling of elation at finding crackers in my desk, next, I accidentally dumped cracker crumbs all over my lap, and finally, when I tried to wipe the crumbs off, I ended up punching myself in the balls.

Mars & Venus at the salon

B and I have been together a while, so it takes me totally off guard when funny little man/woman misunderstandings arise.  I got my hair cut today, but before I left we had this conversation:

Me - Yeah, I think the cut will look really cute.  It would look even better with low lights, but I can't justify spending the money.

B - Why, how much would that be?

Me - Ummmm.... I'm really not sure.  $60 maybe?

B - SIXTY DOLLARS!!  Are you SERIOUS?!

Me - What?  Yeah.  That's pretty normal.  That's actually pretty cheap.  I mean, the place I go to here is just a little mom and pop type place, not some fancy salon or anything.

B - I just can't believe you'd walk out of there paying SIXTY DOLLARS.

Me - Wait, are you horrified because you think the whole thing would cost $60?

B - Huh?

Me - Well the haircut is $35.  The highlights or lowlights would be an extra $60 or so on TOP on that.

B - ARE YOU F$#@ING SERIOUS?!

Me - Hahaha, yes!!  $35 for the haircut - which is exactly what I paid in Ithaca - and $14 for the eyebrows to be dyed* and waxed.  How did you not know this?!!!??  I only get my hair cut every few months anyway.

B - Wow.  I just really didn't know that's what it cost.

Me - Yeah, well you were also giving your mall hair dresser the same $2 tip that she got 15 years ago until I pointed out that maybe she didn't really appreciate the 10% tip.

B - Well I didn't know they got tipped 20% like waitresses did!!!  I thought they all got $2 tips!!

* In case you don't know me in a zoomed-in kind of way, my eyebrows are 100% CLEAR and putting brown eyebrow stuff in them every time I go out is a pain in the ass, so whenever I get my haircut they dye them to match my hair.

A deep love affair with Excel

I've mentioned before what a little nerdy birdie B is.  And grad school has really brought that out in him even more.  The talk of lasers has dramatically decreased since there are no lasers in his current job, but the talk of spreadsheets has dramatically increased.  Every discussion often ends in "I think we need a Gantt chart.  No?  Well then how about a Venn diagram? Still no? Hmmm..."

It was no different when the discussion recently turned to our vacation schedule.  We have a lot of mini-trips planned for this summer so we're trying to get things organized.

B - I need to figure out if I'm going to have enough vacation days for our trips this summer and fall.  Can you look at the calendar and write up all of our plans?  Maybe just make a spreadsheet for me.

Me - Uh.... I am absolutely not making a spreadsheet of our vacation days - how would I even do that?? - but I'll definitely send you a list of everything on the calendar from now until the fall.

This is what I got back an hour later.  Click on the picture if you need to make it bigger to see the detail.  You really owe it to yourself to see the detail.  And in case you don't understand the chart at first glance and have no use for x and y values, I will tell you that the bottom value is time (left to right), the top value is vacation days used and earned (bottom to top), and the little boxes are explanations.

You can't make this stuff up, folks, this is really what our life is like.

Musical Brilliance

Charlotte LOVES songs. Usually I just make stuff up as we're going about our business, but sometimes when we're in the car and she's upset I resort to actual children's songs. Well... attempt to resort to actual children's songs. Have you tried to do that since you were actually a child? Turns out that shit is hard to remember when you have a crying baby on your hands.

"Oh hey! What's that spider song! Uh....

Da na na na na SPIDER!
Ba bump ba WATER SPOUT!
Out came the rain and somethin somethin OUT!
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the Itsy Bitsy Spider did somethin somethin AGAIN!"

He's the Best

For those of you who don't know my husband, he is the ultimate Absent Minded Professor. His parents even used to call him that when he was little and nothing has changed in the years since then. We joke about it all the time around the house, about how his brain is just wired... differently... from other people's. I tell him that the fact that I find all of his flightiness, forgetfulness, and lack of common sense adorable and funny instead of infuriating is why we work. Though about once a week this exchange occurs:

Me - AGH!! HONEY, do you have ANY idea what it's like to live with you?!!
Him - Just imagine what it's like to BE me!!
Me - Haha.. OK, good point.

And while he makes me laugh everyday with some little B-ism, every once in a while he does something SO ABSURD that it makes me cry with laughter and then we reminisce about it for weeks afterwards. One of those little events happened last weekend.

It was your typical Saturday morning in the Scarlet Lily household. Adorable baby was in her swing, loving parents were in their pjs and the coffee was on the way. Both of us take our coffee with cream and sugar... that will be relevant in a moment.

B had offered to fix the coffee for us when I came up behind him to give him a sweet little Saturday morning snuggle (insert cute couple banter). But my loving gesture actually threatened to RUIN THE ENTIRE DAY...

B - Oh MAAAAAANNNNNNN...... (very whiny, very disappointed)

Me - What?!

B - UGH!! I can't remember if I put the sugar in or not!!! Damnit!

Me - (long pause....................) Huh?

B - The Sugar! I can't remember if I put the sugar in yet and if you over-sugar coffee it taste horrible! I'm gonna have to dump these out and brew a new pot.

Me - (TOTALLY blank expression. The kind where your brain has actually stopped moving or processing life)

B - What?

Me - Uh... or you could TASTE IT.

B - (TOTALLY blank expression. The kind where your brain has actually stopped moving or processing life)

B - (More blank stares) WHOA. I would NOT have thought of that. Ha! I was about to tell you that it's total bullshit that Crate & Barrel didn't sell a Sugar Meter that we could have registered for when we got married. Huh. Wow...

Welcome to our marriage :)

Guess who used to work at a natural history museum?

B calls me on his cell while wandering around the mall at lunch:

B - Hey

Me - Hey

B - What are you doing?

Me - Digesting. I ate too much for lunch. I keep forgetting that my appetite has reverted to it's normal level and I'm not needing to eat everything in the kitchen anymore. What are you doing?

B - Wandering around the mall. I finished my lunch early and wanted to get out of the office.

Me - Ah.

B - Hey! The have a fossil store here!

Me - A fossil store?

B - Yeah.

Me - Are you serious??

B - Yeah.

Me - Why would they have a fossil store, I've never even heard of that before. Besides, there's this whole ethical thing with selling fossils. I mean, I don't think it's illegal, but I know Warren was super against it.

B - Huh?

Me - The fossil store. It's like a store that has trilobites in rocks, right?

B - HA! No. FOSSIL, like the name brand. They sell watches and stuff.

Me - OOOOOOOOOooooo!!!! FOSSIL. Got it. Well that's not interesting at all.

B - Sorry.

Through the Eyes of Little Ones

This morning my cousin and his wife had a little boy named Sebastian and the name has caused all kinds of confusion and inspiration thanks to The Little Mermaid. Sebastian has two cousins, both girls, ages 3 and 5, and their mom is also pregnant.

Confusion:
The girls' mom comes home this morning from the gym and the girls go running up to her to announce that Uncle R and Aunt J had their baby.
"Yea? That's wonderful! What did they name him?"
"FLOUNDER!"

Inspiration:
The girls were so impressed with the Disney-inspired name that they have decided that if their mom has a girl this November that she should definitely be named Ariel.

Making Sears Portraits Look Good

Oh my god, stop whatever it is you're doing and go to this site IMMEDIATELY. Seriously... go there right now. Don't have liquid in your mouth or else you'll spit it out.

Awkward Family Photos

First time, shame on you. Second time...

Overheard in the mall in front of Victoria's Secret yesterday:

Woman - I need a job.

Man - Go work at McDonald's.

Woman - Naw, man, they've fired me like FOUR TIMES.

Man - Yeah, but that doesn't matter. They've fired me at least eight times and they still keep hiring me back. Especially the one downtown.

Woman - Yeah, but the last time, that forth time, that was the last straw. They REALLY MEANT IT.

Man - Huh.
